Scotland's Great Drives

Scotland has all the essential ingredients for the perfect road trip - beautiful, ever-changing scenery, incredible attractions and welcoming towns and villages. Scotland is characterised by its compactness and variety which make it ideal for touring by car. Its complex geology provides a wide range of different landscapes within a comparatively small area – the fertile farmland of Strathmore; the rounded bulk and high plateaux of the Cairngorms; the steep, rugged hills and long sea lochs of the West coast. Whether ploughed and placid or bleak and dramatic, it’s always beautiful and you can get flavour of Scotland’s awesomeness in a simple day trip from Knockendarroch.

We are increasingly being asked for our advice on driving routes and increasingly our guests want to travel further and see more on each day trip away from Knockendarroch. We’ve picked some of our favourite driving routes that use Knockendarroch as home-base. Hopefully our one day route suggestions below may take you to places you hadn’t considered, each route offering beautiful scenery as well as plenty of stop-off opportunities and places to eat. Should you be planning a longer self drive tour around Scotland, you might also like to take a look at the detailed road trip plans available from our friends over at www.secret-scotland.com.

Shorter one day routes

The countryside of Highland Perthshire, with Pitlochry at its centre, is some of the most beautiful in Britain. To experience it you need simply choose one of these shorter routes and start driving. These routes make use of many of the back roads around hills, lochs, forests and farmland which make up this area. The scenery through which they pass is stunning, and along the routes there are viewpoints, walks, castles, churches and the small towns and villages of the area, which offer opportunities to stop and explore.
